
The Cement and Concrete Section is divided into three areas: Concrete Lab, Cement Lab, and On-site Plant Inspection.
Responsibilities of the Concrete Lab are:
- compression testing of concrete cylinders & cores
- hardened air testing of concrete cores
- freeze-thaw testing
- curing-compound testing
- equipment calibrations
- inter-lab testing of concrete items
The Cement Lab tests:
- cement, flyash, micro silica and GGBF slag in accordance with our certification programs
- patching materials
On-site plant inspection are performed by our Transportation Technicians, which assure the quality control/quality assurance and production. They inspect:
- Prestressed concrete beams in accordance with ODOT 515 & Supplement 1079
- Certified Precast Concrete Producers in accordance with Supplement 1073 in the production of; three and four sided box culverts, precast manholes, catch basin/inlets, precast barrier, precast headwalls and other miscellaneous precast concrete items
- Certified Concrete Pipe Producers in accordance with Supplement 1074 in the production of circular and elliptical concrete, culvert, storm drain and sewer pipe
The section maintains qualified product lists of companies and construction materials including but not limited to:
- fabricators & producers
- tied concrete block mat
- concrete brick & block
- curing compound
- chemical & air entraining admixtures
- grouts
- corrosion inhibitors
- high molecular weight methacrylate
- epoxies
- soluble reactive silicates
- cement, flyash & ground granulated blast furnace slag
- micro-silica
- latex
- patching material
- quick setting concrete mortar
- concrete sealers.
The Cement and Concrete Section also reviews and approves concrete mix designs and performs research projects.
