The Systems Planning Section helps to keep people safe on Ohio roads by analyzing crash data trends and identifying locations with deficient pavements and bridges. This information is used by ODOT to prioritize transportation investments.
Each year, Systems Planning produces several documents that are used by program managers and other decision-makers at the department. This information includes: general crash trends and rates; a prioritize list of safety locations; and the District Pavement and Bridge Work Plans, which identify and prioritize projects based on existing and projected conditions.
To reach these conclusions, the section uses state-of-the-art technology and methodologies, including those embodied in the Highway Safety Manual and SafetyAnalyst. Ohio is one of the first states in the country to fully implement SafetyAnalyst and use it to prioritize safety locations across the state.
