Dayton - Early Adopter
pic

Dayton was an early adopter of SRTS programming and the first metropolitan area in Ohio to embrace SRTS. After busing cuts in the early 2000s, parents were concerned about their children’s safety walking to school. To address these concerns, the City of Dayton’s Department of Planning & Community Development worked with five Dayton Public Schools to start implementing SRTS activities. They created five STPs in 2008. Since then ODOT has awarded the schools multiple grants for infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects. Dayton is in the process of updating its planning efforts to include all 21 of its K-8 schools.

Toledo - Bike Repairs & Safety Checks

In 2014, Toledo Public Schools (TPS) began working with the YMCA to develop a district-wide travel plan and implement SRTS initiatives across the district. One focus is the bicycle safety education program that incorporates bike repair and helmet fitting workshops in partnership with ToledoBikes! To date more than 850 students at 19 schools have benefited from this innovative program.
